Tenryohai is one of just five breweries on Sado Island, a former penal colony off the coast of Niigata prefecture that has contemporarily been dubbed “The Sake Lover’s Paradise.” Tied to three breweries with history that date to the Edo and Meiji periods, the current brewery was founded in 1983 and led by Toji Kato Senichi since 2018. Featuring local Sado rice and snowmelt from Mt. Kinpoku, the highest point on the island, Tenryohai is the frontier of the “New Niigata Tanrei” style: dry, crisp, exacting and refreshingly lower ABV.
